January. February... Mike Young?
Virginia Tech men's basketball embarks on their final shot at an NCAA Tournament this week. The 2023 ACC Tournament is upon us, and with that comes the craziness and unpredictability of single-elimination basketball. The buzzer beaters; the upsets; the heroic performances. For some teams, conference tournaments present an opportunity to put the polishing touches on a resume. For most, it's their last grasp at the Big Dance.
The Hokies fall into the latter category for the second straight year, besieged by a rash of injuries and fairly uninspired play on the heels of an ACC championship crown. Tech limped to an 11th-place finish with an 8-12 record — bear in mind, a conference where every traditional power had a down year; in some cases, a fall-off-the-cliff year.
But the Hokies have a head coach in Young who knows a thing or two about winning basketball games in March. He has six conference championships, after all, and has never lost a conference title game. Today, I will preview the first-round matchup between Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, and explain why I believe the Hokies are actually positioned quite nicely to make a surprise run.
