Dooley was in attendance for Tech's one day camp today. As confirmed by HokieHaven.com he was offered and accepted a scholarship, his first division 1-A offer. He's a defensive/tight end that has a 6-5 frame to build around.
Doug Doughty calls him a sleeper.
It’s a rare sleeper these days who escapes the attention of the various recruiting sites, but we have one here in Roanoke.
Both Virginia and Virginia Tech are aware of Seth Dooley, a 6-foot-6, 227-pound defensive end and tight end from Glenvar, a Group A program in Roanoke County.
Dooley was at UVa’s spring game on the first Saturday of April and is scheduled to be at Tech for the Hokies’ spring game Saturday.
Dooley, a junior, did not play football for the Highlanders until he was persuaded to come out for the team this year. Coach Kevin Clifford said Dooley had 90 tackles this past season, approximately 20 of them for loss. He also had 8 ½ sacks.
Clifford said Virginia wants Dooley to come up to one of its one-day camps and, if the coaches like what they see, he could get an offer on the spot.
“Coach [Scott] Wachenheim told me, ‘Coach, I think we’re going to like what we see,’ “ said Clifford, who reported that Dooley power-cleaned 400 pounds and ran 40 yards in a hand-timed 4.55 seconds at an Ironman competition.”
Virginia Tech is taking a similar approach, Clifford said. Dooley attended a Tech scrimmage last week and spoke to assistants Bryan Stinespring and Bud Foster, as well as head coach Frank Beamer.
“I think he’s going to test well,” Clifford said. “He’s kind of like the Michael Cole kid [from Cave Spring]. You know he’s going to test well because he’s athletic and moves well. I feel pretty comfortable with our times.”
Even before Dooley’s emergence, Clifford felt he had a Division I-A prospect in Jacob Noble, a 6-3, 235-pound defensive end. Noble has a grade-point average in the 3.5-3.6 range and has attracted the interest of Army and several Ivy League programs.
Dooley had better than a 2.8 cumulative grade-point average after the first semester and could be pushing 3.0 based on his nine-week grades.
