Hokies Make Fullwood's Top-5, Set to Decide on June 28th

DE Darius Fullwood is one of the top 2015 cycle prospects in the state of Maryland. The Hokies made his top-5.

6-4, 242-pound Good Counsel (Olney, MD) star defensive end Darius Fullwood is set to make his college decision at the end of June. Dee, as he prefers to be called, will decide between Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Kentucky, Miami, and Georgia Tech on June 28th. He will visit Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and Kentucky again before deciding.

In part, Virginia Tech made Dee's top-5 because of the program's sustained success for so many years and the level of competition in the ACC.

Additionally, as Dee put it, "Coach Moorehead has been recruiting my tail off since sophomore year. Coach Wiles and Coach Foster have been to visit me, and I've been to visit them. I feel like I have a good relationship with everybody there."

He continued on by saying, "I just feel like it's a good opportunity. Good campus feel, and they're looking for defensive ends in my class. It's a good fit for me."

Dee and Aaron Moorehead have developed a relationship that's about more than football. "It's a real great relationship. We talk probably every week. The past few times we've been talking, it's been about the exams I have coming up. I like that about coaches; it's more than just football. They want to be a type of father figure to me. Be able to look out for me whether it's academics, athletics, or just life obstacles in general. I like that a lot about Coach Moorehead. On top of that, he's a young coach. He kind of understands everything that I'm going through, the things I've experienced, the things like that."

Former Good Counsel teammate Kendall Fuller has given Fullwood a player's perspective of the Hokies' program. "Kendall's telling me nothing but positive things about Virginia Tech. The thing he emphasizes is the development. He got good development at Good Counsel with me, but said they [Tech] took his game to the next level. Even though he was already playing at a high level back here in high school, they turned him into a freshman ACC Player of the Year. That speaks a lot of words."

His film highlights a player with a motor that doesn't quit.

"Coach has been praising me for that since I started high school football sophomore season. That's something I try to remember to do each game I play. I'm not the ultimate fastest d-end, but I'm not going to give up during a game no matter what the score is. We could be getting blown out, and I'll still be keeping that motor running. No matter where you are on the field you're still in the play."

Along with his no-quit mentality and playing style, Dee told me rushing the passer is his biggest strength on the field. Conversely, he's looking to become a better player against the run over the course of his senior season. That, and to up his speed and strength to become a better overall player.

Before June 28th rolls around, what factors will weigh most in Dee's decision?

"Good academics, good opportunity for me to get a good degree with the major that I want to major in [business], good campus life, good campus feel, somewhere I can feel like I'm at home, feel welcome, and a good relationship with the coaches. You're going to be with them for four years, so that relationship can't get any better. A plus would be to be able to play good competition, be able to win games, which a lot of these schools provide."
