You guys probably all remember the update I posted on 2015 Hokies target and 3-star CB Adonis Williamson a few days ago, but his HS coach (Tony Henderson of Indianapolis' Arsenal Technical HS) finally got back to me for an interview, so I figured I'd pass along a few more details that stood out.
The biggest piece of info he passed along is probably that Williamson will be visiting Tech this weekend. Apparently one of the high school's assistant coaches hails from Roanoke, so he's hitching a ride down to Blacksburg with him for his first visit. He plans on returning for an official visit during the season.
Williamson will be taking more visits in the upcoming weeks, and Henderson added that it "wouldn't surprise me if he makes a verbal commitment after one of these trips," which could be good news for Tech. Henderson added that "if he had to pick right now, he'd probably go with Virginia Tech," but schools like Indiana, Michigan State, Purdue and Ohio State have all stepped up their efforts to get him, even if the big programs have yet to offer him.
Henderson said Williamson is looking for "somewhere to get his degree" above all else.
"Maybe the NFL is a possibility for him, but I told him, he's not going to play until he's 65, so you've got to find something that you can do," Henderson said.
Henderson has plenty of experience in this area; he played at Michigan when Scot Loeffler was a quarterback there and played arena football for eight years.
"I think he really wants to be part of a family," Henderson said. "And I told him, feeling like you're always a Hokie or that Frank Beamer is always your head coach is what you want."
He noted that he could see Williamson "doing something behind the scenes in TV or radio, something in communications," even though he's not the most talkative guy.
As a football player, Henderson notes that Williamson is a quick study, but is also athletic enough to play all over the field.
"He mainly plays corner for us, but he's lined up at receiver, safety, outside linebacker," Henderson said. "We blitz him, put him in a two deep or three deep. He's just one of the best cornerbacks in the state or even the whole Midwest."
Williamson doesn't have a set decision date yet, but Henderson doesn't think fans will have to wait too long to find out where he'll be playing.
"He's not waiting until February to decide, that's for sure," he said.
