Great read on Chip Kelly's Offense and how it relates to VT

After reading Brown's piece, I think it's easy to see why having a strong, in control, football mind leading the offense is crucial to having success on the field.

Every coach has to ask himself the same question: 'What do you want to be?'" Kelly said at a recent clinic. "That is the great thing about football. You can be anything you want. You can be a spread team, I-formation team, power team, wing-T team, option team, or wishbone team. You can be anything you want, but you have to define it." That definition is evident in Oregon. Kelly's choice of a no-huddle spread offense drips from every corner of the impressive practice facilities in Eugene. Oregon does not run a no-huddle offense so much as they are a no-huddle program.

French has hammered home that Tech's offense doesn't haven an identity. As for how Tech's gotten there, I'm not sure what the exact truth is. I think Frank Beamer has dictated to the staff what kind of offense he'd like the Hokies to run. This season, that was something akin to what Morris does at Clemson. However, he allows Stinespring and O'Cain to inject some of their own concepts. Then, when it's crunch time (Miami), Beamer hauls the I and two tight end "power" manball scheme out from the well. Each step along the way, focus and productivity are lost.

I know many of us would like to see a change on offense. After watching the film, it's easy to see where play should be sharper. As an example, the offensive line, a unit litered with seniors that have been in Newsome's system for their entire careers, aren't producing at a high level. I think we need better coaching along the o-line, and an upgrade will be better than what's being put on the field now. But, that alone won't turn it around.

Whoever is in charge of the offense, needs to be able to run the show without interference, figure out what he wants Tech to be good at, and then execute a plan. Anything else will be a Band-Aid over the problem. How savvy the coordinator is, and how good the position coaches are around him, will ultimately decide how many points we score. There is talent on the roster.
