The Hokies' football staff attracted roughly a hundred high school prospects to Blacksburg for a one-day prospect camp Saturday, but all eyes were on one player who wasn't participating in any of the drills.
Rising senior wide receiver Eric Kumah of Woodbridge's Forest Park HS has been a top Tech target for months now, and he swung by campus once more to support his friends and get a look inside the team's ballyhooed new indoor practice facility.
"In all the times I've been here, I've seen everything else. It just really surprised me, it was really nice, it's the best facility I've been in," Kumah said.
After taking numerous visits to campus and spending time with his friends from Northern Virginia, Kumah says he didn't need to see the rest of the layout: just the new facility.
"I've seen the whole campus numerous times when I've come and stayed with Travon (McMillian) or I stayed with Greg (Stroman), I've seen it all," Kumah said. "This time I'm just seeing the facility, hanging out, watching my boys camp."
But things were a little more subdued at the camp, partially due to the picturesque Blacksburg weather, but also because one important part of the facility remains a work in progress.
"They say it'll be ready to go with the speakers and everything soon when those come in," Kumah said. "They told me the speakers aren't here yet but they'll be in soon."
Yet even without a functioning sound system, Kumah still says he enjoyed another chance to meet with the staff in person.
"I've gotten to see everyone, I got to see Coach Beamer for a little bit, but definitely Coach (Bud) Foster and Coach (Zohn) Burden the most," Kumah said.
Kumah says he's kept in constant contact with the man who could be his future position coach since Burden joined the staff, but he's also gotten to know a few other staffers pretty well.
"I've gotten to talk to (Burden) a lot, I talk to him every week, pretty much," Kumah said. "I talk to Coach Foster and Coach Burden every week, the offensive coordinator a lot, I just speak to them all the time."
But this weekend's visit was perhaps more significant for Kumah because of the time he got to spend with the players.
At Kumah's previous trips during the season, the players were kept tied up by their gameday responsibilities, but Saturday's atmosphere was considerably more relaxed. A bevy of players stopped by the camp to help run drills with their position coaches, or even just play casual games of catch on the sideline.
That afforded Kumah plenty of chances to get to know some of his potential future teammates.
"I was hanging out with Cam (Phillips) and Isaiah (Ford), (Kendall) Fuller, CJ Reavis, just talking to them, seeing what it's like," Kumah said. "Those guys are role models to me since they're already at the D-I level, they know what they're doing, they know what I'll go through."
Kumah admits that while they kept things light for most of the day, talk did still turn "a little bit" to when he'll make his decision.
The wide receiver has long maintained that he's targeting a June decision date, and he says one could come any day now once he resolves a few lingering issues.
"That's my plan to announce soon, I just don't know when I'm going to," Kumah said. "I still have some stuff to figure out family-wise and school-wise, so once I get that figured out, that's when I'll make that announcement."
While a decision itself might be a ways off, Kumah has cut down his list of schools, and the Hokies certainly seem to be in the mix.

But no matter which school he goes to, Kumah says fans shouldn't count on him arriving early.
"I'm not going to enroll early," Kumah said. "I was debating it last year, but I changed my mind, I just want to enjoy my high school life and then when my college time's ready when it comes, that's when I'll go."
