Wanted to outline the case for another potential direction that Whit could end up going. In terms of fit I think that the argument can be made that Richt is the guy. There is a growing likelihood that he will be looking for a job by the end of the season. Owner of a career .73 win percentage, VT could certainly do much worse than scooping up a successful SEC coach who has had two bad seasons in the past 15 years.
My biggest selling point is that Bud Foster staying with Richt would be close to 100%. Richt's current DC Jeremy Pruitt has been cited by #sources as a direct reason that the entire staff could be dumped at the end of the season.

Furthermore Foster flirted with Georgia in 2009 over becoming their DC so we know that he is a Richt fan.
Richt is probably the closest thing to Frank Beamer left in college football. Same values, principles, and general program direction. The immediate reaction is probably going to be "but wait, he is leading a total dumpster fire of a team right now". While we can all argue the sensibilities of pulling in an Ex-UVA quarterback and hoping that he could lead a team against the likes of Alabama, LSU, & Ole Miss, Richt has a long history of stability and success.

The biggest question mark with Richt would be the direction he would go with his Offensive Coordinator. Richt definitely misses Mike Bobo and Brian Schottenheimer was clearly not the direction to go. My opinion on a Mark Richt hire would be majorly dependent on how his staff ended up shaking out and who he could pull in to call the plays.
The argument can be made that Richt has habitually underperformed given the incredibly fertile recruiting in Georgia and the talent that he has had to work with, but it is undeniable that he has been able to get this talent to commit to the school. This would alleviate a major VT flaw over the past 5 years. Richt has also been coaching against Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, & Les Miles for a major portion of his career. His underperforming seasons have come in a time when Saban and Meyer were lighting the college football landscape on fire. How many games would anyone have won against those Florida or Alabama teams?
Mark Richt may not have the highest ceiling of any coach that Whit could potentially get, but he probably has the highest floor. Something that I am not discounting.
