Jerod Evans' First 3 Games, In Context

The Hokies' new starting QB is off to a record-setting start to the season.

There could be paragraphs filled with pontificating on how hot a start Jerod Evans has gotten off to for the Hokies, but it's better to just let the numbers speak for themselves:

Hopefully that's not too difficult to read.

The numbers are impressive on their own merit. However, they become even more impressive when put into the context of what other Hokies QBs have done. Consider the following:

• Evans has thrown for over 200 yards in each of his first three games. The last time a Hokies QB threw for at least 200 yards in three consecutive games was Logan Thomas in 2011 against Miami, Wake Forest and BC. Prior to that, the last Hokies QB to accomplish the feat was Jim Druckenmiller in 1996, against East Carolina, Miami and West Virginia.
• Evans is completing 67.5% of his passes on the season, good for 13th nationally among all FBS quarterbacks. His worst showing so far has been completing 62.5% against Liberty in the season opener. The last time a Hokies QB completed at least 60% of his passes in 3 consecutive games was in 2010, when a senior Tyrod Taylor managed the feat against Wake Forest, Duke and Georgia Tech.
• Evans' passer rating sits at 174.45, putting him at 11th nationally. His season high of 225.01 against Boston College is the best single game passer rating of any VT QB since Logan Thomas notched a passer rating of 235.8 against Miami in 2011. (Minimum 20 passing attempts.)
• Evans has thrown 10 TD passes, tied for 8th most in the nation. This shatters the old three-game TD record of 8 shared by Bryan Randall (2004 vs Wake Forest, Florida A&M and Georgia Tech) and Grant Noel (2001 vs UConn, W. Mich and Rutgers).

Those are some hallowed names that Evans' performance can be compared to. There is, of course, no guarantee that Jerod will be able to continue producing at this rate. However, if he does, he will go down as one of the greatest QBs to ever play for the Hokies.
