Digesting and Recapping Tre Turner's Commitment to the Hokies

Virginia Tech landed its highest rated recruit of its 2018 class on Wednesday when consensus 4-star wide receiver/athlete Tre Turner committed to the Hokies. That was cause for much celebration.

Tech doubled down on its focus of North Carolina this cycle, and thus far Turner's pledge has paid the most substantial dividend. Yet, Tech is well positioned with many other rising Tar Heel State seniors such as: 4-star LB Dax Hollifield, 4-star LB Alan Tisdale, 4-star DT Alim McNeill, 3-star DB Nadir Thompson, and 3-star corner D.J. Crossen. Though there's still work to be done on the trail, and nothing is final until recruits put pen to paper, the optimism for a quite a Carolina haul is justifiable.

It certainly helps when a marquee talent like Turner pledges relatively early, he can then aid in the effort to bring more similarly skilled prospects into the fold.

The afformentioned Crossen announced a decision date of June 9 on Wednesday — Turner's decision day. Perhaps that's nothing than sheer coincidence, but 247Sports' Ryan Bartow reported in March the pair were a package deal.

Turner is a package deal with three-star cornerback D.J. Crossen (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley), who also favors Virginia Tech. Crossen and Turner both plan to make summer decisions. Crossen played with [Hendon] Hooker in high school and both Guilford County natives are close friends with [Mook] Reynolds.

And yes, these are friends that appear to go way back.

Moreover, 5-star defensive end and West Forsyth HS (Clemmons, NC) product K.J. Henry attended Turner's announcement.

OK, enough of what Tech stands to potentially gain from North Carolina.

Turner noted he will enroll in January as a two-sport athlete. He told the News & Record he will be a priority walk-on for Buzzketball.

"I am going on a football scholarship at the end of the day," said Turner, a first-team HSXtra.com All-Area football selection in 2016. "If basketball ends up being not what I want to do in college, then I'll just be a football player. I'm not going to pursue my basketball career. I'm going to pursue both careers, but ... I'm a football player first and then I play basketball."

ON WHY HE COMMITTED TO VIRGINIA TECH:

"I chose Virginia Tech because throughout the whole recruiting process it's been the best fit for me, and my family loves it. Every visit I've gone on, they've all been good, but that's been the best visit I've been to, the best place."

ON WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ABOUT PLAYING FOOTBALL AT VIRGINIA TECH:

"Well what I'm looking forward to the most playing football is coming out to Enter Sandman. That's probably the best entrance I've seen in college football."

ON HIS GOALS:

"Going in, in January I'll be majoring in kinesiology. I want to be a physical therapist when I grow up. I look forward to having a good three to four years while I'm there playing football and basketball, like I wanted to all my life. I just want to thank everybody for giving me the chance to."
