Looking poised in the pocket, via: NewsRoanoke.com.
In order to gain more insight on the type of player David Prince could be at the next level, I reached out to his coach, Patrick Henry offensive coordinator Aaron Fiddler. He was generous enough to take the time to answer a few questions I had.
1) So many times in high school the quarterback is the best athlete on the field and team leader. On some plays it looks like David's going to run right off the film. What traits make him such a dynamic athlete? What skills does he need to improve on? Is he that leader in the huddle that the team looks to?
His speed is what makes him such dynamic athlete, it is one thing that we cannot coach. He will need to improve his route running if he plays WR, and technique if he plays DB. Tech has one of the best coaching staffs in the country, and they will mold David into the type of player they are looking for at either position. With David they have a great athlete to build on. David's toughness is apparent in his willingness to run between the tackles, and his teammates follow his lead in seeing that he will do whatever it takes to get the ball down the field.
2) Last season David completed 70 of 121 passes for 1,005 yards and 9 scores. He also gained 725 yards on 110 carries. Were the majority of those rushes designed plays or improvisations from the pocket?
I would say 50 to 60 percent of David's runs are designed runs. He hits the hole when running between the tackles, and he is very intelligent and sees the field well in our option game. When improvising from the pocket David is particularly threatening to the defense as a runner.
3) David was recruited by Tech as an athlete, to play either receiver or defensive back. Does he have experience running routes or working in coverage? What combination of skills, be it speed, football IQ, field presence, etc... will help him transition out from under center. At the next level, what position do you think is the best fit for him?
Early on in his career David played both WR and DB, so he has some experience at both positions. David's speed, agility, toughness, and intelligence will allow him to make a transition to a skill position on either side of the ball. He is a definite presence on the field, as seen by his film he can score from any spot on the field. I think he will end up playing Slot at the next level where they can get him the ball in space, but he takes coaching well, which will allow him to do well on either side of the ball.
Prince is a player with a lot of potential and promise. He'll certainly needs polish, that makes me think redshirt, unless he can be an immediate contributor on special teams, which given his speed is possible. Since he projects well to either side of the ball it'll better help fill out the numbers for the '13 cycle. He's a terrific get for the Hokies.
