Initial Scrimmage Thoughts

So I know I'm no French or Mason, but I did have some initial thoughts from today's scrimmage:

  • The stat line for Logan say 5-15, 72 yards, 1 TD 2 INTs. I realize that's not good, but it's slightly better than it looks. There were at least two drops, and the line could not pass block to save their lives during the first two series, making it IMPOSSIBLE to get a good throw off (I bet he went 0-6). They gave him time, and he looked much better. One of the picks came on a simply amazing play by Brandon Facyson. The other was simply a dreadful throw to Duan Perez-Means in the end zone. By bad, I mean BAD. But he also had some amazing deep balls, one for a score to Josh Stanford, and another that Willie Byrn couldn't hold on to (under duress from the corner, I think it was Kendall). I may be the only one who still thinks this, but with a good line I think Logan can make people remember why he is such an interesting pro prospect.
  • Trey Edmunds saw 1 run. While they say it's just because Mangus and Caleb needed to get reps with the first team as well, I'm CONVINCED they're bubble wrapping him. With Caleb out for Alabama, and JC likely out as well, can you blame them?
  • While James Gayle's 2.5 sacks are awesome, he was going against a hobbled Augie Conte (who missed some time with an ankle injury). He looked good, but let's just not take his performance out of context.
  • The person with the most success against Gayle? Laurence Gibson. Completely shut Gayle out during their limited time matched up against one another. The right side of the line (Gibson/Miller) looks solid.
  • I honestly think Dadi Nicolas may be the best thing that's happened to J.R. Collins. Dude played really, really well.
  • Josh Trimble got a lot of work at first team whip, with him coming out on third downs for Brandon Facyson. That means we're going to see a Fuller/Fuller secondary, with Kyle at boundary and Kendall at field...not too bad in my opinion.
  • Coming in to today, I was almost 100% sure that Willie Byrn would field punts this year, and I was proven right. He's not Kyshoen, but in all honesty as long as he catches the ball I'll be okay with it.

So in summary: defense good, offense mediocre. Flashes of brilliance surrounded by chaos and utter hell unleashed by the defensive line onto the offensive line. The usual.

Who was playing Whip?

Trimble with the first team, DiNardo with the second team.

That sounds like a more than mediocre offense. But I've become used to that. Were the tight ends involved at all? And did we actually use a fullback at any point?

Rip his freaking head off!

Behing Stanford, Logan looked at Duan Perez Means several times. He was targeting Means on the second INT. He missed DPM high on a seam route, and then sailed a throw way wide on a drag across the back of the end zone where DPM appeared to be open.

I am so hype for the D-Line this season. Dadi and Tyrel give us 4 solid ends, and if Harley and Marshall can both step up, the tackles will be beasts as well. Good to hear JR killed it today.

Yeah, with reports like this, not hard to see why Facyson and Ken Fuller are praised like they are. The defense must shake Bama's confidence early, and keep hammering away.

James Gayle is an absolute monster. If he plays with this motor this whole season he's gonna play himself into the first round

I wouldn't necesarily read too much into Kendal playing FC over Fayson in the scrimmage today. It could just be the coaches trying to get Kendal more reps since Fayson got a lot in the spring. I don't think its settled yet who will be #1back there and wouldn't be surprised to see Gray give them both at least series or two against Bama since we probably won't run much nickel in that game.
