So I know I'm no French or Mason, but I did have some initial thoughts from today's scrimmage:
- The stat line for Logan say 5-15, 72 yards, 1 TD 2 INTs. I realize that's not good, but it's slightly better than it looks. There were at least two drops, and the line could not pass block to save their lives during the first two series, making it IMPOSSIBLE to get a good throw off (I bet he went 0-6). They gave him time, and he looked much better. One of the picks came on a simply amazing play by Brandon Facyson. The other was simply a dreadful throw to Duan Perez-Means in the end zone. By bad, I mean BAD. But he also had some amazing deep balls, one for a score to Josh Stanford, and another that Willie Byrn couldn't hold on to (under duress from the corner, I think it was Kendall). I may be the only one who still thinks this, but with a good line I think Logan can make people remember why he is such an interesting pro prospect.
- Trey Edmunds saw 1 run. While they say it's just because Mangus and Caleb needed to get reps with the first team as well, I'm CONVINCED they're bubble wrapping him. With Caleb out for Alabama, and JC likely out as well, can you blame them?
- While James Gayle's 2.5 sacks are awesome, he was going against a hobbled Augie Conte (who missed some time with an ankle injury). He looked good, but let's just not take his performance out of context.
- The person with the most success against Gayle? Laurence Gibson. Completely shut Gayle out during their limited time matched up against one another. The right side of the line (Gibson/Miller) looks solid.
- I honestly think Dadi Nicolas may be the best thing that's happened to J.R. Collins. Dude played really, really well.
- Josh Trimble got a lot of work at first team whip, with him coming out on third downs for Brandon Facyson. That means we're going to see a Fuller/Fuller secondary, with Kyle at boundary and Kendall at field...not too bad in my opinion.
- Coming in to today, I was almost 100% sure that Willie Byrn would field punts this year, and I was proven right. He's not Kyshoen, but in all honesty as long as he catches the ball I'll be okay with it.
So in summary: defense good, offense mediocre. Flashes of brilliance surrounded by chaos and utter hell unleashed by the defensive line onto the offensive line. The usual.
