Two recent episodes of the Andy Staples Show (podcast) that were indirectly related to VT - I thought it was relevant enough to share here.
Power Auer: Bruce Arians' Virginia Tech roots
Link to Episode
Interesting Tidbits include:
- Bruce's history of being progressive with race/gender - he was the first white VT player to room with a black player on a post-segregation Virginia Tech football team, and how today he has one of the most diverse staffs in the NFL
- Bruce's ability to forgive players who make mistakes, stemming from losing a scholarship offer after getting caught drinking underage in high school, and how VT still wanted him.
- How he almost got the VT head coaching job instead of Frank Beamer
- How he's still a VT fan today
Shane Beamer Interview:
Link to Episode
Talks mostly about Shane's assentation through the coaching ranks, his recruiting strategy at SCar, and coaching in his dad's shadow. Things I found interesting include:
- What's it's like to recruit over Zoom (0:30).
- Recruiting - in state recruiting, out of state recruiting, relying on transfers (12:30)
- Beamer making a name for himself and players' ethos (24:30) - While it was never explicitly said or even alluded to, given his drive to make his own name, I can't imagine him wanting to be the head coach here.
