The Ladies travel to Athens to meet the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens at 5 PM in the ACC/SEC challenge. Hokie Sports says the game will be on the SEC Network; my schedule in western PA says I will get Vanderbilt/Miami. The game is listed as available on the watch ESPN app for streaming on the SEC network. Georgia is 5-4 with wins over North Carolina Central, Houston, Furman, Tulsa and Prairie View A&M; and losses to Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Penn State and Hampton. VT is 6-2 with losses to Iowa and Michigan and wins over some early season cupcakes. Georgia appears to be between a cupcake and a program about the same as the Hokies.
Georgia is a mix of tall and short, young and old. They start 2 seniors a redshirt sophomore and 2 freshmen. Their backline is 6'5" RSoph Fatima Diakhate and 6'2" junior Amiya Evans. Mia Woolfolk, 6'3" freshman only played in the first game. Their guards are 5'6" freshman Trinity Turner and 5'8" senior De'Mauri Flournoy and 5'7" senior Asia Avinger. The Hokies will have to fight underneath; but should have an advantage outside. Since UGA is shorter, I assume their guards may be quick. I hope our taller girls can stay in front of them on defense.
Bulldog scoring is led by their guards, who all score in double digits; the two forwards score 9.2 and 8.4 ppg. So overall a balanced offense. They only shoot 40.8% overall and 32.7% from three; they only average 18 attempts from three per game and 6 made threes. All of the three point shots come from the guards; Fatima and Evans have no attempts from three. Evans averages 9.3 rebounds per game, almost as many on offense as defense. The Hokies will have to deep her off the boards to limit second chance opportunities for UGA. Georgia only shoots 68.9% on free throws.
Georgia is 4-2 at home with losses coming to Georgia State and Hampton. I think this is a winnable game for the Hokies; but they need to clean up their defense and turnovers. I hope they are still learning to play in Coach Duffy's offense and will start to look more comfortable. It would also help if they could make open shots and layups.
LET'S GO HOKIES!
