Tariq Edwards will Undergo Surgery, Expected to miss 3-4 months
Virginia Tech linebacker Tariq Edwards will undergo surgery today at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg to insert a rod in his left tibia. The procedure is being done to relieve pain from a stress fracture in his shin and he’s expected to miss 3-4 months, according to head athletic trainer Mike Goforth. Dr. Marc Siegel will perform the surgery.
Edwards had 71 tackles last season, including 11.5 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks and two interceptions, starting 14 games at linebacker.
"The injury occurred late in the season and he played in the bowl game with it," Goforth said. "We don't like to rush in and do surgery on those unless you absolutely have to. It hasn't healed by conservative measures, so it’s time to go ahead and fix it."
Goforth said he expects Edwards to be back for the second summer session and ready for the season.
Goforth also said the only other Tech athlete in the past he can remember having a surgery like this is former basketball player Markus Sailes back in the 2004-05 season.
Edwards, G-W, and Bruce Taylor will all be out or limited during spring ball. That's not optimal, but there are a lot of young guys behind them who will benefit from the experience.
